We’ve all been there. We’re enjoying a summer barbeque, with a plate full of hot dogs and coleslaw and a cold glass of beer in your hand. You’re in the midst of an animated conversation with friends, you gesture wildly to emphasize the key points of the story you are sharing, when before you know it, those hot dogs on your plate, covered in ketchup and mustard, soon end up on your shirt. Party foul!

Hey, we’re not ones to judge! There have been plenty of times when we’ve gotten messy stains on a favorite wardrobe piece. You may think, “Well, there goes THAT shirt! It was fun while it lasted!” But fortunately, there are plenty of ways to get those seemingly impossible to clean stains out of your favorite articles of clothing. Here are a few ways to remove popular summer-time stains from your clothing this season:

Barbeque Sauce and Baked Beans

Summer is a time when barbeque sauce as a condiment and baked beans as a side dish really shine. But these things can end up on a pair of shorts or on a white button-down shirt just as often as it ends up on a plate, especially when hungry and enthusiastic eaters are involved. Don’t worry. Barbeque sauce and baked beans, according to the Cleaning Institute, can be removed by flushing it with cold water before treating it with laundry detergent.

Blood

We HOPE you don’t encounter a situation this summer where someone is injured and you have to remove blood from an article of clothing! That would mean someone was playing tag football a little bit too enthusiastically! However, if there is an injury during a day of casual summer fun, blood can be removed from clothing by soaking it in cold water before washing it. If the blood is already dry, simply soak the clothing in warm water instead.

Fruit and Beverages

If there are kids at your party, chances are fruits like watermelon are on the menu! And when it comes to messes, kids are great at sharing! But those stains don’t need to stop the fun. According to the Cleaning Institute, you’ll need to sponge or soak stains in cool water. Pretreat with prewash stain remover, liquid laundry detergent, liquid detergent booster or paste of powder laundry product and water. Then, launder using sodium hypochlorite bleach, if safe for fabric, or oxygen bleach.
